Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party ahead of a national caucus meeting on Wednesday, according to The Globe and Mail.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Trudeau “will be making an announcement and answering questions from the media this morning at 10:45 a.m.”
Calls for his resignation have increased, as polls show the Liberals trailing behind the Conservatives and the surprise resignation of his Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in mid-December.
Reports from CTV News indicate that Trudeau and his chief of staff, Katie Telford, will inform staff today that the Prime Minister no longer sees a path forward due to a lack of support from the Liberal caucus.
Over the Christmas break, members from Ontario, Atlantic, Quebec, and B.C. caucuses expressed their desire for Trudeau to step down.
The caucus meeting on Wednesday is expected to focus on the party’s next steps.
Trudeau has led the Liberals since 2013 and served as Prime Minister since 2015.
