A total burn ban is in effect in Greater Napanee from April 1 to May 15, 2025 to prevent grass and brush fires. The Greater Napanee Fire Department is urging residents to follow the ban after firefighters responded to two grass fires in the past week.
The ban helps protect emergency resources and allows spring vegetation to grow. Even though the ground may seem wet, many factors increase fire risk. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) considers vegetation types, seasonal changes, and fire intensity before setting fire restrictions.
Greater Napanee Fire Services also work with fire departments from Belleville to Kingston and Renfrew County, where large areas of Crown Land are at risk.
The annual burn ban started in 2016, and since then, the number of out-of-control fires has dropped. Before the ban, in 2014 and 2015, fire crews responded to far more incidents.
