The New Canadians Centre in Northumberland is inviting residents to learn how they can support newcomers by volunteering as English tutors or conversation group facilitators.
A volunteer orientation session is scheduled for Monday, March 17, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the New Canadians Centre’s Northumberland office at 600 Williams Street, Cobourg.
The session will outline the basics of the volunteer program, steps to becoming a tutor or group facilitator, and updates on English Language Learners (ELL) in Northumberland.
Volunteers are needed to provide one-on-one tutoring or host weekly English conversation groups to help newcomers improve their language skills and adjust to life in Canada.
Cobourg resident Marina Di Francesco has been volunteering as an English tutor since 2023. She says the opportunity has allowed her to make a positive impact by helping newcomers adapt to their new environment.
Anyone interested in attending the orientation is encouraged to contact Jillien Amalia Hone at volunteer@nccpeterborough.ca to register.
The New Canadians Centre plays a key role in supporting immigrants and refugees by providing settlement services, language training, and community connections.
For those looking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of newcomers, volunteering with the NCC offers a rewarding opportunity to provide support and guidance.
