An apartment fire on McDonnel Street in Peterborough early this morning caused significant smoke but no injuries.
At approximately 6:30 am, Peterborough Fire Services responded to alarms at the building. On their way, they received reports of smoke in the hallway on the main floor. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was visible at the main entrance. Firefighters were directed to the first-floor apartment where the fire had started. They quickly extinguished the flames while other crews evacuated the building as smoke spread to upper floors.
Peterborough County EMS and City Police assisted at the scene, and City Transit provided a bus for residents to wait while fire crews handled the emergency.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
