Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 have the opportunity to make a difference in their communities by entering the 2025 Meaning of Home contest. The contest, hosted by Habitat for Humanity and sponsored by Sagen, encourages students to reflect on what “home” means to them while supporting the mission of building affordable homes for Canadian families.
Habitat for Humanity Northumberland CEO Cathy Borowec tells what this means to her.
Participants can write a 50-300 word essay in English or French and submit it online, by mail, or email by February 21, 2025. Each entry automatically generates a $10 donation to the student’s local Habitat for Humanity, helping more families access safe and affordable housing.
Borowec tells us the dream of home ownership is precious.
Three grand prize winners, one from each grade, will receive a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat, an iPad, and a pizza party for their class. Nine runners-up will win $10,000 grants along with iPads and class pizza parties.
According to Borowec, the contest provides a picture of what’s important to the next generation.
Since its inception in 2007, the contest has raised over $2.7 million and inspired over 120,000 students across Canada to participate.
The contest’s judging period will take place from February 24 to May 2, 2025, with winners announced in May.
