The province is investing up to $25 million in water infrastructure to enable the construction of 2,266 new homes in the Town of Cobourg.
Premier Doug Ford made a stop in the town on Monday afternoon to be part of the announcement.
This funding is part of the first round of investments under the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, a $970-million initiative aimed at supporting municipalities in developing, repairing, and expanding drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure to facilitate new housing developments.
The Town of Cobourg will use the funds to expand its wastewater system and watermains, ensuring the delivery of clean water to new homes in the Cobourg East Community Secondary Plan area.
MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South, David Piccini, spoke at the event and said this $25 million investment will enable us to build a stronger Cobourg with nearly 2,300 additional homes – that’s 2,300 more residents and families who will be able to realize the dream of homeownership.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland also took to the podium and says this is an exciting day and credited the vision of council.
In this year’s budget, Ontario announced more than $1.8 billion in housing-enabling infrastructure funding through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, in addition to the province’s Building Faster Fund, which rewards municipalities for progress toward their housing targets.
