There was no shortage of rainbow pride at the second annual Northumberland YMCA Rainbow Run.
Nearly 200 participants came out in vibrant rainbow gear, painting Cobourg with acceptance and love for the LGBTQIA2S+ community. The event started at the picturesque Cobourg Yacht Club’s waterfront and wound through the rainbow-adorned downtown core.
Thanks to the efforts of participants and volunteers, over $2,000 was raised for YMCA Northumberland’s Strong Communities campaign, the Y has announced.
This initiative helps those facing financial barriers access YMCA programs and supports youth mental health, digital literacy for seniors, and more.
Eric Mejorado, the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging lead, led the group in a warm-up to the Village People’s Y.M.C.A. He emphasized the YMCA’s mission to strengthen the community and support everyone, including trans, gays, lesbians, and two-spirited individuals.
Eunice Kirkpatrick, CEO of YMCA Northumberland, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, highlighting the event as a testament to their commitment to inclusivity.
The event was partially funded by a Government of Canada’s ParticipACTION grant, with additional support from local sponsors like Cameco and Vandermeer Toyota. The YMCA says the 2024 Rainbow Run was more than a race; it was a joyful celebration where every step and color mattered.
