A 78-year-old man has died after being struck by a tree during ice storm cleanup in Peterborough County, say OPP.
On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Peterborough County OPP issued a release, saying officers were called to a sudden death incident related to the recent ice storm the day prior on Monday, April 7.
According to OPP, officers were dispatched to a Burnham Line residence in the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan, and were told an individual had been struck by a falling tree.
When officers arrived on scene and talked with a witness, they told police the homeowner had asked for help clearing trees damaged from the ice storm, reported OPP.
The two were both experienced in tree removal and had already felled four or five trees before the last one came down and struck the one individual, said police. OPP said a 78-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
OPP extended condolences to the family of the deceased Tuesday.
Police are also encouraging all residents to take all steps possible to ensure their safety when attempting activities such as this, and if it falls outside your abilities, hire a professional, said OPP.
