While the ice storm forced the cancellation of the first-time Northumberland OPP and Brighton Fire and Rescue’s Polar Plunge fundraiser, participants have raised a lot of money for Special Olympics Ontario athletes.
Participants were set to take the plunge in Brighton at the government dock on Bayshore Road when the ice storm hit, but for safety reasons, the event was called off.
A $4,000 fundraising goal was previously set, and organizers have confirmed that goal has been shattered, thanks to 34 registered participants, area businesses and the community’s support.
Supporters raised nearly $6,500 for Special Olympics Ontario, with a large percentage set to stay in this area to support local athletes. OPP says this action speaks volumes on how committed the municipality is to building a more understanding, accepting and inclusive community.
Despite the actual plunge being called off, organizers say the first-time fundraiser was a success when it comes to raising awareness and showing support for resilient athletes who continue to inspire people with their courage, dedication and perseverance.
