A 58-year-old Cobourg man has been charged with obstructing a police officer following a property inspection dispute.
On March 27, 2025, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Cobourg police were called to a home in the area of Maher Street and King Street West. Officers attended at the request of Municipal Law Enforcement, who were there to conduct a property standards inspection.
Upon arrival, police say the resident became irate and refused to allow officers onto the property without a warrant. Officers advised the man that under Section 15.2 of the Building Code Act, by-law officers may enter a property without a warrant at any reasonable time to inspect for property standard violations.
Despite this, police say the resident continued to refuse entry and obstructed the officers’ path. When police attempted to take the man into custody, he resisted arrest.
As a result, the 58-year-old Cobourg resident was charged with obstructing a police officer. The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on May 7, 2025.
Cobourg police remind residents to be aware of municipal by-laws and property inspection procedures to avoid similar incidents.
