The 2025 Cobourg/Port Hope Polar Plunge has raised over $25,000 for Special Olympics Ontario, supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities through the transformative power of sport.
On March 9, the Cobourg and Port Hope Police Services partnered with Community Living & Respite Northumberland to host the event at the Cobourg Marina. Special Olympians Phillip Mitchell, Max Lagrois, and Robert Smith bravely led the first plunge, joined by Constables Josalyn Hilts and Tammie Staples. Police Chiefs Paul VandeGraaf and Tim Farquharson followed, with community members joining the chilly lineup to help raise $25,906 towards the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run’s $1 million campaign goal.
The event’s success was made possible thanks to support from local organizations, businesses, and volunteers. Cobourg Fire and Northumberland Paramedics ensured safety at the scene, while the Cobourg Yacht Club provided facilities for registration and warming up.
Additionally, Cobourg and Port Hope Police have created a 2025 Special Olympics Torch Run coin, available for $20 at both police stations. All proceeds from the limited-edition coin will directly support Special Olympics Ontario.
Organizers thanked the community for their generosity, encouraging continued support to help athletes thrive through sport.
