A new campaign called Prosper in Northumberland is encouraging residents to support local businesses as the region faces economic challenges linked to international trade disputes.
Launched by a coalition of 33 local businesses, municipalities, and organizations, Prosper in Northumberland aims to boost the economy through increased local shopping, business partnerships, and training for entrepreneurs.
“Supporting small businesses is vital for Northumberland’s economic strength,” said David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South. “By working together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community.”
The initiative’s Buy Local campaign encourages residents to shift part of their shopping budget from online and out-of-town retailers to local stores. The campaign highlights that every dollar spent locally helps sustain jobs and supports economic growth in Northumberland.
“Choosing local options when we shop is a simple yet powerful way to strengthen our community,” said Northumberland County Warden Brian Ostrander.
The initiative will also provide workshops, resources, and training for local entrepreneurs to help them manage economic uncertainty. In addition, Prosper in Northumberland will gather data on economic impacts to ensure government support reaches local businesses effectively.
“This initiative is about taking action,” said Nancy Allanson, CEO of the Trent Hills Chamber of Commerce. “By buying local and supporting businesses, we’re creating a stronger, more prosperous Northumberland.”
More details about the campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.
