Northumberland-Clarke federal Liberal candidate John Goheen and his campaign team are calling out alleged vandals destroying election signs.
In a press release issued Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Goheen’s team stated: “Overnight, we had some of our largest signs destroyed along King Street in Cobourg.”
“There is no place in the democratic process for this type of wanton vandalism,” reads the release.
The team goes on to detail that signs are a great cost to campaigns, including the time it takes volunteers to install them.
“Democracy is based on the fundamental beliefs of fairness and equity,” his team goes on to write, adding people can express their displeasure when it comes time to cast their ballots.
“We must understand that destroying signs is a criminal act of vandalism. It is far more than a rejection of one party or one candidate over another.”
The team goes on to ask anyone with information relating to these crimes to contact Cobourg police at 905-372-6821.
Earlier this year, during the provincial election, Cobourg police already issued a reminder to the public that removing, damaging or vandalizing election signs is a criminal offence. In most cases, signs are also on private property, which means offences under the Trespass to Property Act can also come into play.
