Lower Trent Conservation has issued a flood outlook statement for the Trent River (Hastings to Trenton area.)
“It is important to note that during this time high flows and water levels, unsafe banks or other factors could be dangerous for recreational users and waterfront landowners,” reads LTC’s notice. “Nuisance flooding for some may occur within low-lying and poorly drained areas.”
LTC officials say spring freshet conditions have started throughout the Trent River watershed with increased flows and water levels expected locally for several weeks. They also note there’s still a significant snowpack in the northern Trent River watershed.
Because of this, Parks Canada-Ontario Waterways (Trent Severn Waterway) will be making adjustments at water control structures to accommodate runoff from the snowmelt occurring in the northern region, explains LTC.
Meanwhile, higher flows and water levels are expected on the Trent River as snowmelt coming from the north watershed make its way through the system.
“These higher flows on the Trent River may result in nuisance flooding in low-lying areas but widespread flooding is not anticipated at this time,” say staff.
Residents in flood-prone areas should key a close eye on water levels and flows and take necessary precautions to protect property – i.e. ensure sump pumps are clear and working; have a portable generator and back-up available; ensure downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least three metres from any structure; remove or secure items that could float away if flows increase; keep emergency numbers close by, and familiarize yourself with municipal emergency preparedness plans.
While the potential dangers presented by rivers, small streams and open ditches never cease to exist, they are of particular concern this time of the year. Water currents are strong and temperatures dangerously cold, adds LTC.
Parents and caregivers should keep kids and pets away from all waterways. Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times.
LTC’s flood outlook statement is in effect until Friday, April 4 at noon or until an update is issued.
