Port Hope police say their investigation continues after an incendiary device was set off in the Greenwood Towers Peter Street area Tuesday morning.
Port Hope police have confirmed that they were called to the building after a device, similar to a smoke bomb, was set off in the building. All units of the building were evacuated while police investigated the report of a second device, as well as whether it posed a risk to safety.
All residents were temporarily sheltered in Port Hope transit and school buses with the Town Park Recreation Centre held on stand-by should it be required. Police say Port Hope fire stepped in to help keep residents comfortable, providing coffee and snacks from a nearby coffee shop.
Earlier Tuesday morning, the service advised of a police presence in the Greenwood Towers area, saying an investigation was underway following a suspicious package report and were asking people to avoid the area until further notice.
“As a precaution, the building has been evacuated, and one male is in custody,” police initially reported.
In their initial report, police also said the OPP’s explosive disposal unit (EDU) was called in to assist with the probe.
Police say that charges are pending following their investigation by both the Port Hope Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police.
