The Town of Cobourg has introduced new Community Safety Zones to improve safety for students and residents.
The Public Works Division announced that new Community Safety Zone signs have been installed near St. Mary Catholic Secondary School and Northumberland Christian School. The initiative follows the approval of By-law 052-2024 last September, which established additional safety zones for school properties located on public roadways.
In accordance with Cobourg’s By-law to Prescribe a Rate of Speed (053-2024), new 40 km/h speed limit signs have also been installed on Densmore Road. These measures are aimed at improving pedestrian and driver safety in school areas.
Cobourg Police are reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert around schools, parks, crossing guards, and school buses. They note that fines for traffic violations in Community Safety Zones are doubled to help enforce safer driving habits.
“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in making our streets safer,” stated Cobourg’s Public Works Division in a release.
