Local conservation authorities have issued water safety warnings due to rising temperatures and forecasted rainfall that could lead to higher water levels and potential flooding.
Lower Trent Conservation has issued a Flood Outlook Statement for creeks and streams across its watershed, stretching from Grafton to Quinte West and north to Rice Lake. Rainfall combined with melting snow could cause localized flooding in low-lying areas. The public is advised to stay clear of waterways and use caution near unstable banks, bridges, and culverts.
Quinte Conservation has issued a Water Safety Statement as the spring freshet is expected to begin this weekend. Up to 20 millimetres of rain and warmer temperatures could lead to rapidly rising water levels in rivers and creeks. While widespread flooding isn’t expected, nuisance flooding in urban areas and ditches is possible. Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to prepare by ensuring sump pumps are working and keeping storm drains clear.
The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority warns that remaining ice on streams and rivers is thin and may break up with warm temperatures and rain this weekend. Localized flooding near ice jams is possible. The public is urged to stay away from water bodies, particularly near culverts and bridges.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from their local conservation authority for changing conditions.
