Icy conditions and heavy snowfall contributed to 26 collisions across Northumberland County on January 23, 2025, prompting significant emergency response efforts.
Northumberland OPP report that, alongside EMS and fire crews, officers dealt with crashes both on and off Highway 401, with the earliest reported at 2:40 a.m. near Alnwick/Haldimand. A tractor-trailer landed in a ditch, requiring heavy tow services. Later in the day, a series of multi-vehicle collisions, including one involving 13 vehicles and another with three tractor-trailers and a bus, caused highway closures in both directions.
In Cramahe Township, a collision involving 13 vehicles forced a westbound closure at County Road 25, while another crash involving four vehicles shut down lanes near Brighton. Minor injuries were reported in several incidents, but no one sustained life-threatening injuries.
Crews worked throughout the day to clear debris and assist those involved. OPP say snow plow operators were crucial in maintaining road conditions, while tow operators played a key role in reopening lanes. By 8 p.m., all diversions had been lifted, and traffic resumed on Highway 401.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collisions and urge drivers to exercise caution during winter weather.
