
US president-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada has the Trudeau government hoping for the best but bracing for the worst.
Trump’s threat, which has also been made against Mexico, is being used as leverage in his desire to tighten border security, reducing the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States from both countries.
While the federal Liberal government scrambles to negotiate a softer stance on the matter by Trump, the Conservative opposition has seized on the issue as another example of the Liberals’ failure to best serve Canadians. Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Philip Lawrence says his party has a plan.
