The Northumberland Land Trust (NLT), in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada, is working to purchase the 300-acre Biddy Creek Wetland in Brighton, creating the largest nature reserve in NLT’s history. The property, which includes 130 acres of regionally significant wetland along with mixed woodlands, requires $190,000 to secure by the January 2025 deadline. Once acquired, the NLT will act as the property’s steward, keeping it free from development and protecting it as a vital ecological habitat.
“This is a unique opportunity to conserve a diverse landscape in southern Ontario, where wetlands are increasingly rare,” said NLT President Rob Kennedy. “Our partnership with Ducks Unlimited allows us to purchase and preserve this 300-acre habitat for the cost of a 50-acre lot.”
Marie-Paule Godin, Ducks Unlimited’s Manager of Provincial Operations for Ontario, notes that the acquisition will protect habitats for at-risk species, improve water filtration, and reduce flood risk. The Biddy Creek Wetland holds significant ecological value in Northumberland County’s official plan and will contribute to flood control, drought resistance, and biodiversity.
As southern Ontario’s natural spaces decline, this acquisition represents an important step in preserving the environmental health of the region.
