Katie Burnham and her siblings are continuing the family legacy at Burnham Family Farm Market, a business their parents, Anne and Paul Burnham, founded in 1994.
Situated between Cobourg and Port Hope, the sixth-generation farm produces seasonal fruits and vegetables, which Katie now oversees as manager of the market store. Katie explains that her parents encouraged all their children to pursue other careers before returning to the farm. After working elsewhere, Katie and her siblings were drawn back to the business, ready to carry it forward.
Katie’s sister, Amy, manages the farming side, working alongside their father. The family is preparing for the eventual transition of leadership, a process they’ve been discussing for years. “We’ve been talking about it for many years. It’s tricky, but we’re committed to making sure everyone remains in good spirits and still loving each other,” Katie says.
With fall in full swing, the market is busy bringing in sweet corn, pumpkins, and squash, while apple picking continues until Thanksgiving weekend. A popular family destination, the farm also features a corn maze with a new elevated platform this year, offering visitors a panoramic view of the fields.
The Burnhams remain deeply committed to community initiatives, such as the United Way’s painted pumpkin campaign, just one way they continue to demonstrate the family’s enduring connection to the local area.
