It’s rumoured that the ghost of King Midas himself imbued the Golden Drumstick trophy with the magical ability to herald those with the most turkey spirit…at least that’s what I’ve been telling everyone who asks.
What is the Golden Drumstick you ask?
It’s the coveted prize for the person or persons who dress the part or show the most thanksgiving spirit at the annual YMCA Northumberland Turkey Trot.
The day gets rolling with the adorable Gobble Wobbles in a race designed for those under 4 years old.
Organizer Rod Simpson tells us more.
Simpson tells us that once you’ve had a chance to experience the day, you’re bound to want to return year after year as either a participant or as a spectator.
Once the feathers have been cleared, it’s time for the Wing Ding Kid Fun Run, a one kilometre race that’s specially designed for kids.
The main event is 2.5K and 5K runs appropriately named ‘The Gobbler’ – but you don’t need to be a runner to participate.
Simpson explains.
For many families, the Turkey Trot has become a family tradition that supports the YMCA Strong Communities campaign, dedicated to ensuring that everyone – children, teens, adults and seniors in our community who are in need of assistance can access programming at the Y by eliminating financial barriers.
According to Simpson, he has one more reason that’s difficult to argue with.
So come out and show your turkey spirit on October 14, 2024. The fun begins at 8:30 am with registration followed by the Gobble Wobble at 9:30 and a family-friendly morning of fun and fitness.
