Five Counties Children’s Centre has achieved a significant milestone by reducing its wait list by 11.1% in the 2023/24 year, bringing the number of children waiting for care to 2,309 – the lowest level since the pandemic. Despite this progress, demand for services remains robust as the Centre continues to serve a high number of clients across Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County, and Northumberland County.
The reduction of the waitlist is one of the highlights of their annual report and CEO Scott Pepin credits it to everyone’s hard work.
In the past year, Five Counties provided services to over 6,100 children and conducted nearly 53,100 visits.

This success is attributed to the Centre’s dedicated staff and the introduction of innovative programs such as the SmartStart Hub, which streamlines access to care for families. The Annual Report, released at the Centre’s 49th Annual Meeting, highlights these achievements and the continued need for support.
CEO Scott Pepin praised the staff for their resilience and adaptability, particularly during the transition to a new client information system, a first among Ontario’s children’s treatment centres. “Their commitment has been crucial in navigating this period and improving service delivery,” Pepin noted.
Financially, Five Counties also celebrated a record fundraising year, raising $1.216 million. This includes a notable $250,000 donation from Dr. James and Sheila Ryan.

That investment to the tune of $2.025 million annual funding increase has been instrumental in reducing wait times and enhancing services.
Looking forward, Five Counties remains committed to expanding its support for children and families, with projects like the Northumberland Backyard Project set to transform outdoor spaces for therapy and recreation.
