Concerned animal lover Shelley Hatton says she’s a self-confessed animal lover who was devastated by the news that 6 female dogs were abandoned in Brighton last week. Last Thursday evening (May 23), five of the ‘mini poodles’ were taken in by local residents, but unfortunately one of the dogs was found deceased along Hwy 2.
Hatton said she was motivated to create her first ever gofundme page to see if she couldn’t enlist the community’s help to care for these animals.
All the animals are female and between 6 and 8 years old. We asked K9 Fit’s Ashley Graham if she thought the dogs were part of a puppy-mill operation.
All of the dogs are in need care from a veterinarian and Graham tells us that Presqu’ile Animal Hospital has stepped up to help as well.
Even so, it will take several thousand dollars to make it possible for this animals to find new homes. All need dental surgery as well as to be spayed and one of the dogs is likely to require surgery for a fractured pelvis.
As of this writing, the gofundme page is getting closer to it’s goal of $10,000 to cover medical costs. Organizer Shelley Hatton says 100% of the money will go towards the dogs welfare.
The gofundme page can be found here (Fundraiser by Shelley Hatton : 5 DUMPED PUPS NEED OUR HELP – Brighton, Ontario (gofundme.com) if you would like to make a donation, and Hatton says, feel free to make a donation directly to the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward, K9 Fit or Presqu’ile Animal Hospital.
Once the dogs have a clean bill of health, Marley’s Pet Rescue has agreed to help find homes for four of the poodles and have already setup foster homes. The fifth female will stay with Ashley once it’s been assessed whether or not she needs surgery to convalesce before she becomes available for adoption.
