Cobourg Fire Prevention Inspector Jennifer Cooper told us sharing your emergency escape plan should be part of welcoming guests, like telling them where the extra towels are kept.
Jennifer said that, after working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, having an escape plan is the best way to ensure everyone’s safety.
Fire-related injuries and fatalities often increase during the holidays with one in three fire deaths in Ontario occurring during the months of November, December, and January.
Cooper shared one of the biggest reasons why.
Kids, guest, pets, cooking and more can be a distraction, and Jennifer says her top three priorities are working smoke and CO alarms, and a home escape plan.
So be sure to make your holidays merrier by keeping family and guests safe this Christmas.
Jennifer says being familiar with escape plans, especially for the young and older folks who might have mobility issues, are conversations everyone needs to have be safe over the holiday.
