One of the region’s home builders has received a prestigious award for a waterfront project in Brighton.
The Ontario Home Builders’ Association has recognized Gordon Tobey Developments Ltd. for the so called “House of Glass.”
Stephen Tobey runs the business and talked to My Broadcasting Corporation about the scale of this custom build.
Audio PlayerThe house received awards for architectural design and room design for its kitchen.
The home was built on a pre-exiting lot, replacing an older home that was demolished pre-construction.
Tobey says the location meant paying special attention to the local water table.
Audio PlayerThere were some shoreline improvements made to the property to address the recent high water mark set on Lake Ontario.
In terms of the home’s dimensions, Tobey says Lower Trent Conservation regulations determine the minimum height for the house.
Tobey says notable features of the house include ultra high end windows and increased building overhang, key to climate control for a home that boasts so much glass.
Audio PlayerThis technology and building technique is available for any home build however Tobey says the main obstacle to wide spread use is cost.
The “House of Glass” also has a large flat roof which Tobey says requires a drainage solution that differs from the more common gabled roof design.
Audio PlayerTobey says another factor when designing and building at flat roof is addressing heat loss.
Audio PlayerAll-in-all, an award winning build which Tobey says is a testament to the skills and talents of the amazing crew at Gordon Tobey Developments Ltd, in Brighton.
