There is no easy solution for the current homeless situation in Northumberland.
The topic and potential solutions were discussed at yesterday’s county council meeting.
Cobourg Councillors Nicole Beatty and Aaron Burchat presented to county council after hearing from nearly a dozen members of the public during a recent Cobourg council meeting.
They asked council to consider a coordinated response from multiple levels of government to work toward a solution to unhoused people living on the streets of Cobourg, including utilizing currently unused property like the Brookside facility.
Deputy Warden Mandy Martin pointed out that the buildings were abandoned for good reason – often because making them habitable would costs thousands, if not millions of dollars.
County council directed staff to continue to seek consult with member municipalities and seek advice on a viable way to proceed.
