The 10th Annual Lilac Festival in Warkworth had a special guest, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the 29th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and she planted a new lilac plant to commemorative the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Dowdeswell said the people of Warkworth gave her a warm welcome.
With 300 lilacs plants and over 83 unique varieties, the Lt. Governor of Ontario added the “Avalanche” variety, a gorgeous double-white lilac to the Millennium Trail to honour the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in a ceremony on May 28th in Warkworth.
Accessible from the bridge on Main Street in Warkworth, just off County Road 29, this 2.6km trail offers a panoramic picture of the surrounding tree-covered drumlins, forests, uplands and valleys and of course, at the end of May until the end of June is alive with the fragrance of lilacs.
“The National Garden Bureau has declared 2022 as “The Year of the Lilac”,” said Janice Allen – chair of the Warkworth Lilac Festival. “We are pleased to designate the Avalanche, a white variety to honour the Queen.” For more information about the Warkworth Lilac Festival visit www.warkwortlilacfestival.ca.
