In a 4-3 vote, Cobourg Council decided in an emergency meeting last night (May 19) to close and fence off Victoria Beach.
This will be in effect until at least the provincial stay-at-home order is lifted.
Mayor John Henderson, Deputy Mayor Suzanne Seguin, Councillors Brian Darling and Adam Bureau voted in favour of the closure.
On June 7th, Cobourg Council will make its decision on a staff report on what will happen at the beach for the entire summer.
The latest is a Stay-At-Home Order runs at least through June 2nd. One of the rules under that order is on the use of parks – which can be interpreted as including the beach. Large gatherings have been seen at the beach in the warmer weather, making it hard for the town to deal with regulating, especially coming up to a long weekend.
It will cost $2,000 plus HST for fencing and another $330 for signage.
