It turns out, our local drinking water is consistently below provincial acceptable concentration of lead.
In light of recent media reports (Nov 4), Lakefront Utility Services Inc (LUSI) wanted to assure customers that our local drinking water is safe.
The report outlined that testing of drinking water in 11 cities across the country has found hundreds of thousands of Canadians have been exposed to lead levels that exceed federal guidelines.
The discovery was made in a year-long investigation by more than 120 journalists from nine universities and 10 media organizations, including The Toronto Star.
Out of 12-thousand tests since 2014, 33 per cent exceeded the national safety guideline of five parts per billion.
According to LUSI, all regulatory requirements surrounding lead sampling are fulfilled and the local drinking water supply is consistently well below provincial guidelines for acceptable concentration of lead.
LUSI says that in 2017/2018 there were over 260 random samples tested for lead with the average lead concentration being .2 micrograms per litre, which is well below the maximum acceptable concentration of 10 micrograms per litre, as regulated by the Ontario Drinking Water Standards.
LUSI encourages customers to stay up to date on the safety of their drinking water. To view the annual report and compliance reports, visit the water section of our website at www.lakefrontutilities.com.
